The Dutch Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Defense have
decided to send a defense attaché to the Dutch embassy in Iran. This is all the more remarkable as NATO, of
which the Netherlands is a member, sees Iran as an enemy. Dutch ambassador to
Tehran, Susanna Terstal, recently visited an Iranian general. On the Iranian press website, Mehr News,
the Dutch ambassador is quoted as saying, ‘The Netherlands is interested in
starting military relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran.’ It is known that the Dutch do not even have
defense attachés in the countries of their NATO allies.
